Our approach is meticulous: we don’t just evaluate what’s in your feed room; we have an eye for every detail that might influence your horse’s nutritional needs. From the layout of their stall or the dynamic of their pasture mates to the specifics of hay net type or pasture management, we leave no stone unturned. Our recommendations are designed to address specific and achievable health and performance goals.
Founder Ofelia brings an extensive background in equine health, the science of nutrition, and farm management to her work. Certified through Legacy Equine and Rutgers University, and well-versed in managing horses with complex health needs, she works in close collaboration with veterinarians and fellow equine nutrition professionals to ensure the best possible support for your horse. Ofelia works independently, without any ties to feed or supplement companies; her recommendations are based on finding the best fit for your horse.
We offer on-site consultations for clients in NY, NJ, and CT, and work remotely anywhere outside of this area, committed to the same attention to detail for each type of consult. Each program includes formulation of goals and a comprehensive review of your horse’s diet, health history, and management practices, with recommendations both discussed one-on-one and provided in writing.
We provide guidance for implementing changes and support as needed throughout the process, and collaboration with your veterinarian when appropriate. All recommendations ensure that your horse or barn is meeting their nutritional requirements at appropriate levels. Additionally, we are always happy to evaluate a hay analysis, and can work with owners to obtain one if needed. We offer the add-on option of dietary review by nutritionist Dr. Rachel Mottet, an asset particularly in complex cases.

We aim to feed a horse as closely as we can to how their GI tracts evolved to eat, while keeping the limitations of domestication in mind. When a client has access to a hay analysis, we can use this as the cornerstone of our nutrition evaluation.
We have no professional ties to feed or supplement companies. Our recommendations are based on the best interest of your horse’s health and unique circumstances, paired with the most current science and research in equine nutrition.
When appropriate, we will coordinate with your veterinarian to ensure our nutritional plans are aligned with your horse’s broader health needs. We are also part of a network of fellow equine nutrition professionals who are available for collaborative input in complex cases.
We understand firsthand the complexities of feeding and caring for horses with endocrine concerns (such as PPID and EMS) and we have a special soft spot for seniors. We collaborate with your veterinarian at the crucial intersection of nutrition and medicine, especially when it comes to serious conditions like endocrinopathic laminitis.
Having managed horses in various settings, from large show barns to intimate private farms, and in navigating our own horses’ unique needs, we bring a practical, empathetic perspective to our work.
We take a meticulous look at all factors involved in your horse's nutrition. We set clear, achievable goals together; these may address body condition, specific health concerns, energy level and performance, or reducing time and finances spent on supplements.
Growing up in New York City, I was always drawn to horses and the outdoors. This led me to a B.S. in Natural Resources, focusing on land management and forestry, a perspective that continues to inform my own farm and pasture husbandry. Always drawn back to horses, I later took on barn manager roles for both show barns and private farms, both in hunter/jumper and eventing settings. It was here that my values around horse care continued to evolve, as I saw the power of both individualized, detail-oriented care and the vital role that nutrition plays in every horse’s health and well-being, regardless of their life stage and job. My own horses in particular made me think critically - one of whom had a long and complex rehab from an orthopedic injury and another who I had to retire unexpectedly.
I wanted clarity and confidence in my nutrition choices, yet I saw how difficult it was to sift through the overwhelming, often conflicting information available to horse owners. While also passionate about equine medicine and preparing to apply to vet school, I realized my passion lay in the overlap between nutrition and health care, leading me to change gears. I completed certification programs through Rutgers University and Dr. Rachel Mottet’s Legacy Equine, focusing on both the science of equine nutrition and its application.
From our days competing in the hunter/jumper ring to now managing his complex health needs at home as a 27 y.o., my bond with Whitley fuels the heart behind Whitfield Equine Nutrition. I strive to give horse owners the support and tools they need to feel confident in their horse’s nutritional health, freeing them to focus on the bond or partnership they share with their own horse. A bond like this alters the course of our lives; it can inspire, define us, and direct us towards the human and horse person we wish to be.
"Ofelia is an incredibly responsible and educated horsewoman, who has a genuine love and respect for the animal. We recently consulted with Ofelia about the nutrition program for a newer horse of ours, Ben. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with her, and we were very pleased with the overall experience. She was incredibly knowledgeable and communicative throughout the entire process. She was able to make several recommendations on adjustments to our feed program without drastic changes. She was able to save us money on supplements while also streamlining the feeding program.
Within just a few weeks of adjusting our feed program per Ofelia’s instructions, we have already noticed a difference in Ben’s overall wellness. We have been able to see improvement in his body condition without losing his calm energy level under saddle. We will absolutely continue to work with Ofelia to keep our horses in their best physical condition."
"Ofelia understands the complexity and science of equine nutrition. Her knowledge and understanding of the subject make her an invaluable asset when it comes to feeding horses. Ofelia shows dedication and genuine care towards the well-being of our equine friends."
"Ofelia is extremely dedicated to helping horses and continuing her education in the area of nutrition. She has excelled in the Equine Nutrition Advisor program and is one who can be trusted with your horse's nutrition needs! She is also a joy to communicate and interact with; I highly recommend her."
